Reclaimed Structures For Sale

From time to time, Thistlewood acquires reclaimed structures that can form the basis of a new design or an interesting addition or element with an existing structure.

Thistlewood emphasizes the re-use of materials when possible. We have a special interest in reclaimed materials and have several reclaimed structures (barns, trusses, etc), timbers (douglas fir, white pine, etc) and flooring (douglas fir, white pine and southern yellow pine) in inventory.

C. 1850 35' X 55' Hand-hewn White Pine Timber Frame Barn

This inspiring timber frame threshing barn measuring 35' x 55' was originally built c.1850 near Toronto, Ontario and was constructed entirely from old growth White pine timbers. All large timbers are "hand-hewn" and exhibit a beautiful aged patina. c_1850_white_pine_timber_frame_barn.jpg

A large graceful "swing beam" spans the width of the structure and is a truly unique feature of this early barn. The top plates supporting the foot of the rafters are single timbers incredibily stretching the entire 55' length of the building. Smaller timbers and diagonal knee braces exhibit vertical saw marks and would have been milled at a local water powered sawmill. All joinery is traditional mortise and tenon. Square nails secured the rafters, roof and siding boards.

C. 1850 White Pine Timber Frame BarnThe entire frame was professionally documented and photographed prior to disassembly. All timbers have been catalogued for identification using stamped metal tags. This structure is ideal for conversion to residential or commercial space. Accurately dimensioned drawings and professional structural engineers stamp are available. Thistlewood takes great pride in offering reclaimed structure and reclaimed building materials to our clients.

Thistlewood is strongly committed to the environment and the wise use of its resources. We believe that using reclaimed materials makes sound environmental and economical sense and today many of our custom homes and commerical structures are crafted out of reclaimed woods.

Building with pre-used materials not only gives our clients peace of mind in knowing that new trees were not harvested for their project, but the end result, because of its former use, is rich in personality and unique character.

Additionally, in the case of reclaimed woods and wooden structures, the wood (typically Douglas Fir) tends to be from old growth forests harvested hundreds of years ago. Because of this, the wood quality is more dense with tighter growth rings than new woods harvested today.

Reclaimed Douglas fir is stunning and possesses rich reddish hues with a pronounced, bold grain. These timbers are accented with marks and blemishes from its former use and this in itself makes for an overall aesthetic appeal.
